The Amina Profile is an exceptional love story set between Syria and Damascus from the renowned Canadian filmmaker Sophie Deraspe. In 2011, Sandra Bagaria, a Canadian woman, discovers “A Gay Girl in Damascus”, a blog by Amina Arraf, and is immediately attracted to the mysterious author of these texts. A steamy online chat-based relationship ensues as Amina seduces not only Sandra, but the entire Western media, hungry for a new angle at the Arab Spring. However, the virtual love affair quickly turns into a detective story as questions about Amina’s true identity arise. The romance transforms into a thriller involving the American secret services, giant media conglomerates and the countless supporters of the Syrian revolution. A Gay Girl in Damascus: the Amina Profile is an extraordinary insight in the Arabian Spring and contemporary digital communication, examining the boundaries of online trust.
